Metaphors

In proverbs, just as in advertisements, surprising comparisons and intriguing images draw people’s attention. Sometimes exactly the same metaphors or comparisons are being used in widely different cultures, and, conversely, different metaphors often convey quite similar messages in the ideas they express due to common human experience. The metaphors listed below give a good impression of the numerous ways in which women have been imagined in proverbs.
